:: BELGIAN BEERS ::
TRAPPIST
There are only seven (six until just recently) Trappist Breweries as designated by the International Trappist Association guaranteeing its beers are “authentic Trappist products” brewed within the walls of a working monastery. Six are in Belgium and one is in The Netherlands. All except Westvleteren are available in the US.
Brouwerij Der Sint-Benedictus AbdiJ De Achelse Kluis
The Saint Benedictus Abbey of Achel is the newest monastery to take up brewing in Belgium, and is one of only seven Trappist breweries now operating there. In fact, the Abbey is located partly in Holland and partly in Belgium, but the brewery operation is in Belgium.

Dry-hopped secondary fermentation, which lasts 5-7 weeks. Bottle conditioning lasts for two months. This is a world classic. 6.2%
Abbaye St-Remy De Rochefort
Abbaye St-Remy de Rochefort is perhaps the greatest of Belgium’s Trappist Abbey breweries. For centuries, the Trappists have been at the forefront of Belgian brewing, producing unique and amazingly characterful beers that secular brewers strive to emulate. The beers of Rochefort, which have always been benchmarks for style and quality in Belgium, have never been compromised to appeal to a broader market. Rochefort makes beers that are strong-flavored and utterly unique, as they have always done.

Dark orange-amber color with some yeast sediment. Aroma of fresh pears and apples, caramel, molasses, and dried fruits (dates, plums, grapes). Intense, rich flavors of malt, yeast, caramel, brown sugar, and a candy-like fruitiness...complex and well-balanced. Perhaps the archetypal dubbel. 7.5%

Brouwerij Der Trappisten van Westmalle
Founded in 1831, the monastery has brewed since its early days, though it was slow to make its products available commercially. ABBEY STYLE ALES
While only the Trappists still have their own breweries, other monastic orders in Belgium made beer in the past as a means of raising funds for their own support or pastoral work, these abbeys commission commercial brewers to make beers for them or license their names.
Corsendonk
Corsendonk Abbey in Oud-Turnhout, Belgium was founded by Maria van Gelre, youngest daughter of Jan III, Duke of Brabant. The monks of Corsendonk started a brewery in 1400, which flourished until 1784 when the abbey was closed by Austrian ruler Jozef II. In 1906 Antonius Keersmaekers founded a secular brewery to revive the monks’ brewing traditions.

St. Bernardus
In the poetry village called Watou, in the most remote corner of West Flanders, in the middle of “Le Plat Pays”, the heart of the hop area lay the Trappist Monastery Saint Sixtus. After WWII, the brothers decided to stop commercializing their beer. An agreement was made, inside the walls of the Monastery that they would brew only for their own consumption, for sale to the public at the gates of the Monastery and also to a few taverns connected to the Monastery. An outside brewer would brew and commercialize their Trappist Beers for 30 years. In 1992, the agreement came to an end because the Trappist Monasteries (5 in Belgium and 1 in the Netherlands) decided that the qualification ‘Trappistenbier’ could only be given to beers brewed inside the walls of the Trappist Monastery. Since 1992 the beers brewed in Watou have been sold under the brand name, St. Bernardus.

HYBRID BELGIAN STYLES
BRASSERiE D’ACHoUffE
At the end of the seventies, two brothers-in-law, Pierre Gobron and Chris Bauweraerts, decided to create their own beer in their own brewery. From 1982 until 1984 the two ran the brewery solely as a hobby. They then purchased the former farm buildings, dating from 1805, in which the brewery was installed and increased beer production each year. Exporting began with Québec, Canada and it soon became big business for this small brewery. “La Chouffe” became the most imported Belgian craft beer in Quebec.

Dedolle Brouwers
Louis Nevejan, the founder of the brewery, was a doctor in medicine. At one point, the brewery simultaneously also functioned as a distillery. When the founder died in 1882, the brewery was sold to Alouis Costenoble and his family continued to brew for three generations until 1980 when the brewery closed. It was taken over by two brothers who saw this as an opportunity to experiment with a wide variety of beers.

Browerij Het Anker
In 1471, by special law, Duke “Karel de Stoute,” also Count of Flanders and Lord of Mechelen, declared this brewery’s beer exempt from duties and excises. The Van Breedam family bought the brewery “Het Anker” in 1873 and grew it to one of the first modern steam-breweries. At the end of the 1990s, Charles Leclef - fifth generation of the Van Breedam family - started investing in the production and restoration of the old buildings.
Gouden Carolus Ambrio - 25.4 oz - $ 15.00
While the recipe has its origins in the 14th century, the present version is a little heavier and contains more hops. The balance between the different malts, the fine hops and typical tastes of spices creates a perfect harmony between the powerful taste of brown beers and the freshness of the blond beers. This fresh aromatic and pithy light-brown drink can be served cool. 6.5%
Gouden Carolus Tripel - 25.4 oz - $ 15.00

It is matured at length in cellar and bottle, and is guaranteed to be brewed only from pale malts. It is traditionally top-fermented and is 100% pure. 9%
Gouden Carolus Grand Cru - 25.4 oz - $ 18.00
Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of “Charles the Fifth”, the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus “Cuvee of the Emperor” in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition. This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus. This beer is 100 % natural, with no preservatives, no adjuncts and no chemicals. Excellent to store several years.
Brasserie Huyghe
In 1902, Léon Huyghe settled in Melle. Barely four years later, in 1906, he bought the brewery, which he named “Brouwerij-Mouterij den Appel.” During the First World War, several breweries got into trouble, and after the war the brewing-coppers, which the occupying forces had claimed, had to be replaced as quickly as possible. In 1938, the brewery was renamed Brasserie Léon Huyghe.
Delirium nocturnum - 11.2 oz - $ 8.00
Delirium Nocturnum is a Belgian strong dark ale. It pours a deep ruby in color, with a head that quickly dissipates to a sticky lacing, and a carbonation reminiscent of root or ginger beers. As with most dark ales, you’ll notice significant caramel and darker malts on the palate, along with hints of cherry and raspberry. The hops become present as the beer warms to room temperature. Unlike many dark ales, however, Delirium Nocturnum is medium bodied so it drinks smoother. 9%
Brouwerij De leyerth
Urthel is the creation of wife and husband team Hildegard and Bas van Ostaden, owners of Brouwerij de Layerth, who met while working at La Trappe. The duo share responsibilities, with Hildegard formulating recipes and brewing the beer; and Bas, an artist and expert marketer, designing the artwork, packaging, and sales materials.

Urthel Bock - 25.4 oz - $ 18.00
This beer is a unique blend of German and Belgian brewing cultures, using primarily German malts and hops, but finished with a Belgian yeast strain and bottle-conditioning. The result is something truly unique, and arguably an emerging beer style: a Flanders Bock. Dark, leathery-brown brew, with a tan-colored, super-tight, creamy, fluffy lacing. Slight up-front sharpness, a meld of light hops bitterness. Herbal tea and a tease of pepper tucked beneath a moderate residual sweetness, with flavors of toffee, brown bread, dried fruits and fermented honey. 7.5%
Urthel Hibernus QuenTum Tripel - 11.2 oz - $ 8.00
Rich golden-yellow hue. Pours with a foamy white head. Spicy hop and sweet pale malt aromas follow through on a full-bodied and chewy palate with vinous notes and good bitter hop finish. Impressively complex. 9%
De Proef Brouwerij
Working in his ultra-scientific brewery in western Flanders, Dirk Naudts is one of Belgium’s leading brew masters. For years, Dirk has been coming up with winning beer recipes for breweries large and small throughout Belgium and Holland. (You would be amazed at how many beers with other people’s labels on them were actually created by Dirk.) It was only natural that when he finally put together his own tiny but ultra-scientific brewery, it would be called De Proef – “the Prof” – Dirk’s fond nickname.
De Proef Flemish - 25.4 oz - $ 19.00
The name ‘Flemish Primitive’ refers to the famous wild yeast that lends its unique flavor accent to this extraordinary ale. For centuries, wild Brettanomyces yeast floating on the open air in Flanders has fermented the local brew, producing a fruity and complex farmhouse character that aficionados recognize as distinctly Belgian. Here, several strains of Brettanomyces have been matched with rich, golden malt and a generous helping of local hops to yield a hearty, earthy, yet very refreshing brew. 9%
Deproef KO - 25.4 oz - $ 19.00
The name says it all. This fabulous golden ale will knock you on your can. But K-O delivers more than just an alcoholic punch in the face – this is real beer, with pure malt and hops, body and character, not just a metric ton of fermented candy sugar. 10%
Brewery Van Steenberge
Around 1900, the province of East Flanders had 664 breweries. In 1932, that number had more than halved and only 306 remained, of which 21 were in the Meetjesland. Only one single brewery in the Meetjesland remains active today: the Brewery Bios - Van Steenberge, which is located on the beautiful Lindenlaan in the center of Ertvelde.
Biere Du Boucanier Golden - 11.2 oz - $ 9.00
While it probably has one of the meanest labels, its taste is a sublime combination of bitterness (hops) and sweetness (rich malt), all complimented by a specific spiciness infused by a combination of three exclusive yeasts. To reach such high alcohol levels, the brewer must start with three times the normal amount of the best barley malt and give the yeast several weeks to do its fermentation work. The beer is then re-fermented in the bottle (and the keg!). This technique keeps the beer alive and fresh for many years, while producing a natural carbonation. 11%
Guiden Draak - 11.2 oz - $ 9.00
The flagship of this famous brewery. Dark brown tripel ale with a creamy head, natural malt, and a toffee-like sweetness with hoppy accents. Barleywine strength at 10.5%

Presents a rose-like floweriness from bottle-conditioning; orange-zestiness from the hops; and finishes with a late, spicy, cumin-seed dryness. Very refreshing & cleansing. Try it before a meal. 7.5%

FARMHOUSE ALES
Brasserie Dupont
Six or seven breweries make Saisons. The undisputed classic of the style is Saison Dupont. It comes from an artisanal brewery that is also a working farm (eggs are sold in the ‘executive’ offices!) and produces beers with exquisitely hand-made character, and unruly clumpy yeast. The Dupont brewery is run by Marc Rosier (brewer) and his sister (microbiologist). They also operate the farm, and are interested in sustainable agriculture.

Oud Beersel Oude Gueuze - 12.7 oz - $ 13.00
Old Gueuze is a blend of Lambics from different years. One year old Lambic is still readily fermentable. Two year old and three year old Lambics main contributions are to the taste. Blending the Lambics produces a sparkling beer that is made in accordance with time-honored traditions. Oud Beersel’s Old Gueuze’s notable hop and fruit character is much appreciated by beer fans. 6%
